The Northern Arizona University scholarship, popularly called the Lumberjack scholarship, is a scholarship that is restricted to residents of Arizona only. The NAU lumberjack scholarship has been around since 1962. The scholarship, just like most United States scholarships, is one given to students who show strong leadership qualities, who are resilient in their pursuit of academic excellence, and who are willing to serve their community gladly. The scholarship, as mentioned earlier, is for residents of Arizona who wish to get a college degree at Northern Arizona University. The scholarship is made to reward outstanding students who show prowess in their communities as well as in their personal lives. The aim is to work together with these students to enable them to achieve higher educational excellence.

The 2023 Lumberjack Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship for freshmen of Northern Arizona University or high school seniors who aspire to gain admission into Northern Arizona University. The scholarship is used only for the attainment of an individual’s first degree. There are different selections or sections of the scholarship with funds for each semester ranging from the Opportunity Accordion closed award to the President’s Accordion closed award, with amounts ranging from two thousand five hundred dollars ($2,500) to nine thousand dollars ($9,000) per academic year. The amount given is based on the merits of the scholarship aspirant.

For a student to be considered for the scholarship, he/she must be a permanent resident of the United States as well as a resident of Arizona and must also possess a GPA of at least 3.0, like many other United States scholarships show financial need as decided by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Furthermore, students are expected to be enrolled in a minimum of twelve credit hours per semester. They are also expected to have completed the sixteen (16) core college-preparatory courses necessary for admission. Students are not expected to get more than one deficiency in any of these preparatory courses. These preparatory courses for eligibility with its requirements are English and Mathematics (these courses are to be taken for four years by students), laboratory science (students should get at least two years of high school laboratory science: one year each of biology, chemistry, earth science, or physics. The Integrated science course may be added in place of a necessary course), the social science course, the second language course as well as the fine arts course (students are expected to take one year of history/social studies, one year of social sciences as well as one year of study of the compulsory second language course and the compulsory fine arts course).

The scholarship covers 100 percent of Northern Arizona University Flagstaff Mountain Campus tuition (fall and spring) only. It does not cover other college expenses for the entire eight semesters of acquiring the degree. It is a scholarship that covers 100% of a student’s tuition fees. It does not cover any other fees or expenses of the awarded students. NAU 2023 scholarship award varies as it is based on merits. For renewal of scholarship, students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0.

The NAU 2023 freshmen scholarship award has two other categories of awards: the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) awards and the Out of State (non-WUE) awards. These other categories have their hierarchies of awards, just like scholarship awards for residents of Arizona only. As stated, the NAU awards for Arizona residents have a hierarchy of awarding the scholarships;

The President’s Accordion Closed Award: this award is given to Arizona residents who attain a GPA of 3.5-3.74 as their core high school GPA. The amount awarded for students under this category is nine thousand dollars ($9,000) per semester.

Dean’s with distinction Accordion Closed award: this award is awarded to Arizona residents who obtain an unweighted high school GPA of 3.4-3.49. The amount awarded under this category is six thousand five hundred dollars ($6,500).

Opportunity Accordion Closed award: here, students are expected to reach an unweighted core high school GPA of 2.99, with its funds being two thousand five hundred dollars ($2,500).

Arizona Academic Decathlon Accordion Closed award: the amount awarded under this category is two thousand dollars ($2,000).


The 2023 Northern Arizona University scholarship award covers 100% of the awarded students’ tuition fees for the eight semesters of study, from the start of the first semester of their first year till the last semester of their final year at Northern Arizona University. Other expenses of the students, however, are not covered by the yearly funds. The scholarship is to be renewed yearly by the awarded students.

Funds range from two thousand dollars ($2,000) to nine thousand dollars ($9,000), depending on the merit of the student.

The scholarship allows four thousand residents to attain a college education, costing about ten million dollars ($10,000,000) on these yearly scholarships. Their admission into the university gives them automatic consideration for the scholarship.

The scholarship may be used only for a student’s first baccalaureate degree.


  • Applicants must be residents of Arizona and permanent residents of the United States.
  • Students are considered automatically for the scholarship immediately after admission into the university has been attained.

  • The writing of the SAT and the ACT are not used in the admission process.
  • For undergraduate applicants, they must have earned fewer than 12 college credits after graduating from high school.
  • Students must attend the Flagstaff Mountain Campus.
